Customer: Penguin Putnam Group USA
Website: Penguin Putnam Academic Catalogs
Application: Provide On-Line Version of Catalogs for Academic Purchasers
Return on Investment / Savings: Savings of 80% over printing and shipping catalogs. ROI estimated at over 200%, based on accessibility of new catalog and ordering.

Penguin Putnam Group (USA) Academic Services provides books and programs designed to meet the needs of teachers and students. As the first and foremost paperback publisher of classics, and the publisher of such modern writers as John Steinbeck, Arthur Miller, William Trevor, Toni Morrison, Julia Alvarez, T.C. Boyle, Saul Bellow, and J.M. Coetzee, Penguin Putnam’s books have long been classroom favorites.

Texterity, using Published Web Format conversion, provided savings of 80% versus printing and shipping individual catalogs to Academic buyers.

The strategy of the effort was to leverage existing Academic catalogs which were developed to target specific subject areas such as Art, Asian Studies, Cinema, etc. By using the existing ISBN (International Standard Book Number), the unique number assigned to a book title by its publisher for tracking and ordering purposes, Texterity was able to automatically create "hot links" to the information and purchasing area at Penguin Putnam. Since the users of the catalogs were in academic environments, it was critical to make the information available with only a web browser compatible with PC, Macintosh, and Linux environments. And, not require the user to have Adobe Reader, Flash, or other plug-ins.

The version of the catalogs used for print purposes were converted into Texterity’s Published Web Format. The result was an integrated "Library of Catalogs" that could be searched either individually, or as a whole collection. This allowed users to view, search, "hot link" to detail, and print order forms from any web browser without the need for a plug-in or application.

Based of the success of this project, Penguin Putnam expects to expand the use of PWF for additional catalogs, as well as sales and marketing content important to their community.
